On Tuesday, October 28, 2025, Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica, causing major devastation in Black River, St. Elizabeth. Residents suffered immense losses, including extensive damage to infrastructure and heartbreaking fatalities. The aftermath has significantly disrupted local livelihoods, leaving many people anxious and uncertain about the future.
Recovering from this tragedy will take time due to the widespread damage. Still, Jamaicans are known for their resilience. They have always shown remarkable strength during challenges, and regardless of how long it takes, Jamaica will come together to restore their community.
We Got You Through Disaster Corporation was established as a nonprofit in the State of Georgia on November 12, 2025, in response to Hurricane Melissa, which hit Black River in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. Founder Donavan Thomas, a Black River native, started the organization to help his community recover from the hurricane's impact.
Purpose
We Got You Through Disaster Corporation’s main goal is to offer disaster relief and support, as well as other essential programs, to socioeconomically marginalized Black, Brown, and minority individuals living in areas affected by natural disasters.
This fundraiser was started by Donavan Thomas via DFT Business and Education Services LLC to help Black River. The money raised will be used to support We Got You Through Disaster Corporation's efforts for Black River.
Note: Currently, DFT Business and Education Services LLC is managing this fundraiser on behalf of We Got You Through Disaster Corporation. In 2026, We Got You Through Disaster Corporation will take over all fundraising activities.
